I'm in Austin from this Friday through the 25th. Arrival time depends on how driving plans a-z shake out. I leave Thursday morning so I have ~960 miles and two days in which things can screw up. I'm staying with Lou and his family throughout, an unprecedented experiment in familial spirit driven by a whole series of multiple bird-killings with a single stone-type decision processes. OK, so they're going to spend the upcoming long weekend at their beach house in Galveston (funny how that plan only resolved *after* I mentioned I'd be in town). This relieves me of friends-versus-family guilt trips over Presidents' Day. Not that my family is inclined to those, but we think we ought to be and so there's a certain level of after-you-Alphonse slapstick involved not dissimilar to the negotiations that no doubt occur when related polar bears inadvertently meet on the Arctic ice (damn, you? again? didn't we just run into each other a decade or so ago? how's it been? great. love to mom if you haven't eaten her. ok, hungry now. you look tasty. a seal would be tastier. see ya.) Badgers and porcupines are also good animal models for the immediate Fuka clan, where "clan" is usefully defined as group of people who must have been spawned of the same parental units, because we all look like each other and them. So much so that I once mistook for me a picture of my brother Joe as an adult atop Wheeler Peak in New Mexico. Hey, long-dirty-blonde-haired people wearing tortoiseshell glasses bundled up in hooded parkas look much alike, no matter the gender. Damn, I wish I'd not inherited that square jaw. Or that Joe could grow a beard. Ah, well, the visit will only be twice as long as the standard period recommended for house guests and fish. We'll survive. Maybe my nephews will assist on armadillo-hunting. From what I see in Twitter reports, it's all the rage around there. THough we will be hunting with cameras, not guns, at least if I rather than they have anything to say about it. At this point Jim is no doubt remembering a pressing engagement with a fourth cousin twice-removed who was very dear to him and just as soon as he recollects her name (Ida? Eva? Marge?) he'll need to be gone somewhere that isn't Austin for the duration. And ChrisPK has another day or two to re-re-consider dropping by. In my favor is the fact that I've a deep-seated affection for Tea. Earl Grey. Hot. Is the Blanton Gallery where they stuck the Michener Collection? I should look this up. I am woefully unprepared. --Mary P.S. And, yes, toasted Ken myself last week. Long time no see, yet only yesterday. > Jim, I sure hope we can see you. Well, at least me. You guys look like you were having simply waaaayyyy to much fun this weekend and I sure as heck wish I could have made it there. Oh well. Such is life. So glad things went well (they did, didn't they?) and that Linda Wack continued to scare away the competition :) Very cool. On a good note for me, I did a half marathon on Sunday - my first foray to that distance since I did the nasty job on my PF in Nov. I ran with my running buddy Julie so I'd behave myself. We were slow (2:08) but finished the distance and my foot is feeling pretty good today. Takes a couple of days for my foot to recover but this run recovery was better than the 12 I had done the weekend before (at a faster pace on a hillier course - should have backed off a bit but run and learn). So I'm hoping I'm still on track for that run in April, though I may not have much by way of long runs under my belt. Foot first, this time. I simply would like to get to the start, run the race and end up with my foot about on par with where it was on Sunday after the run. That would be a successful race for me. Weather up here is simply gorgeous - supposed to be in the 50s today. I think New England moved closer to the equator sometime between last winter and this one. Very strange. Enjoy the day! Green. Especially since I was arriving in Houston as people were leaving Austin. Ah well. On the achieving goals front, I have a report: I found out earlier this week that I'd been voted by the Mazamas Climb Committee to provisional leader status. This means that I'm eligible to lead Mazamas climbs and after leading three provisional climbs (assisted by a full-fledged leader), I'm eligible to become a bona fide leader. Earlier this year, I almost bagged the whole thing--kind of like hitting the wall in a marathon it occurred to me later--but I sucked it up and finished off the last of the requirements. Well, our ski outing for tomorrow just got canceled. Somehow the prospect of a storm, which is developing as I type, and its up to 30 inches of snow and 50-60 mph winds was deemed to not be a very welcoming set of conditions for the Cornell alumni and guests. Henry is bummed ('Well, that sucks') was the quote I just saw from his email. So we may have to fall back on that old-fashioned form of entertainment: running. Have a great weekend, Bs. >From cloudy Portland, cpk On Wed, Feb 22, 2012 at 6:25 AM, Cindy Buhner wrote: > OK, I am green, simply green with jealousy.
